Blog Summary 1

My personal view of leisure is when I am intrinsically motivated, I have a positive state of mind and it leaves me with feelings of pleasure and happiness. Although time is not a factor that effects whether an activity is leisure or not, I feel it is a big part of whether something is pure leisure to me. For example when I am participating in an activity like snowboarding where my challenges often meets my skill level and I reach flow I am having such a positive experience that I lose track of time. Another way time affects my leisure is when I do not have any time to pursue activities that put me into a positive state of mind where I can reach flow. I get too caught up in work and school and I don’t have time to pursue an activity that is pure leisure to me. Even though leisure is not defined by activity or time it is rare for me to feel pure leisure if I have a time constraint.

Most of the time I experience leisure when I am intrinsically motivated although it does happen that I can also feel leisure when I am extrinsically motivated into doing something. I mentioned this in my first blog where I discuss work and leisure and how sometimes even if I am somewhere that I have to be for work I can still experience leisure by socializing with new people or getting a sense of satisfaction when a job is well done.

I am heading to a habs game right now with my dad and two friends I'm sure it will be a great leisure experince, I hope Habs win.........

Time and Leisure

Time should not be in the definition of leisure because you could have free time but not necessarily be at leisure. On days like today I feel like time should be in the definition of leisure. Today was a long day at work, not really any longer then usual, just one of those days that really move slowly. I wish once my day was over I could spend my night doing something I really enjoy but I can’t because I have to catch up on my homework. I seem to get this feeling a lot more this semester now that I am working full time and going to school part time. I don’t like having a day that is filled with activities that are extrinsically motivated but it is a part of life. I am complaining a lot more then I should be right now, the only reason I have so much to do today because I didn’t do any homework all weekend and had a great time with my friends. I went to see a pre-season habs game in a loge that I got through work. I had never been to a game in a loge before and it is incredible. It is like you are watching the game at home in your living room but it is right in front of you. There is an open bar, free food, couches, your own washroom and the game is live. It was a pre-season game so the atmosphere isn’t as crazy as it is during the season but it is still an amazing experience. The Canadiens also won the game 5-0 against the Ottawa Senators. I spent the rest of my weekend going out to eat with my friends and playing golf which was also a great leisure experience. I like playing golf a lot because it is fun being outside on a side day with your buddies but it is never really pure leisure for me. The reason being I am not quite good enough to experience flow on the golf course. I might have one or two holes where the challenge is perfectly matched with my skill level but most of the time it is too much of a challenge. I just started playing this summer and I think the reason why I keep playing is because I am improving and because of those couple of holes where I get the perfect shot I do experience flow and it is an incredible feeling. Long story short this weekend I experienced leisure because I felt I had no time constraints and I was free to do what ever activities I wanted to do. Now Monday has hit and I am extremely busy at work and with homework and feel I have no time for leisure.

Leisure to promote products

I have noticed that many companies use Leisure to promote and sell their products. An good example that I noticed would be the Subway zone at Allouette games. People win the chance to see the game in the Subway zone by eating subway sandwiches. I think Subway does this so people have a good leisure experience at the Alouettes game thanks to subway and in turn become loyal to buying Subway over other sandwiches. When people have good leisure experiences do to a promotion or from a company it also creates a buzz. People will talk about the great experience they had with their friends and family.

A Question I have for the class: Do you guys consider fishing a sport??????

My Weekend

My weekend was filled with great leisure experiences. Friday some of my friends took me out for dinner at La Louisianne in NDG because they missed my birthday dinner the week before. The food was great and the service was also very good. After that I went to a buddy’s house to play a game of poker. The whole night I consider pure leisure because it was freely chosen I was intrinsically motivated to do it and seen as I one the poker game it left me with a sense of satisfaction, especially seen as I rarely win at poker. Saturday I spent the day at a skateboard contest called vans backyard party. I was there because I had to be there for work because I sponsored the party with Coors Light so I had to take down tents and other promotional items at the end of the contest. So in a way it was extrinsically motivated because I had to be there for work but it was still a leisure experience because I enjoyed watching the contest and I had some friends there to watch it with. Today I had a meeting with a group for a consumer behaviour class to discuss or project and then I spent the rest of the day watching football.

Leisure and Work

Hey Class. This is my first blog. Not really sure what to write about so i guess i will talk about my leisure and my work. I work for Molson Coors brewery and my job is to plan and implement promotions and events. Dependent on the promotion or event i am working on my work is often leisure for me. Although i don't have a sense of preceived freedom because i am obligated to be there it can be leisure because i meet new people all the time and when an event or promotion goes well i get a sense of satisfaction after it is done. I also can drink free beer and i love beer (especially molson products lol) which can make my job a better leisure experince as well. I also love my job because it is different every week. A promotion ususally last so long so i am always working on something new.
When my job is not leisure for me which happens pretty often is when i have to be at a random bar in Sorel or Beloeil and all my friends are getting together downtown. It is also less of a leisure experince when i am really stressed from work because things are going wrong with an event that I planned. Or if i have 6 promo girls giving me attitude because they don't like the outfits i gave them....Anyway i hope you guys will enjoy reading my blogs and hopefully they will get more interesting as i get used to writting them.....
